Below Lincoln, the field compresses fast. Buick through Hyundai spans 48.8% to 37.0%, about twelve points separating a Buick buyer from a Hyundai buyer, across brands with very different reputations and repair costs.
The Most Surprising Thing in the Data: How Little It Varies
Before the breakdowns, here's the finding that shaped how we present them.
VSC adoption barely moves. Across states with meaningful volume, take-rates run from 35.4% to 52.4%. Across makes, most sit between 37% and 53%. And pricing is flatter still: state average prices range from about $3,820 to $4,210, clustered tightly around $4,000.
Given how different these groups are — different climates, road conditions, incomes, vehicle types, repair costs, and brand reputations — that's a narrow band. If VSC purchases were driven mainly by vehicle-specific risk, you'd expect Porsche buyers and Honda buyers to behave very differently. They mostly don't.
What that suggests: this decision appears driven less by the car and more by the person. Some people want coverage and predictability in their repair costs; others prefer to carry the risk themselves. That preference seems to travel with the buyer across brands and geographies.
Two things break the pattern, and both are worth understanding, the German luxury brands and Tesla. Everything else is variation around a fairly stable middle.
The practical implication for you: don't over-index on what other people with your car decided. A 45% take-rate on your make is not a recommendation. The four conditions further down this page will tell you more than any average will.
Why Tesla's 6.2% Is Not What It Looks Like
The most misread number in the dataset, so let's be direct.
Every other make sits between 35% and 54%. Tesla is at 6.2% across 370 funded buyouts. That's not a brand landing at the bottom of a range, it's a brand outside the range entirely.
This is structural, not a verdict. It is not Tesla owners collectively concluding that extended coverage is a bad deal.
Tesla operates a proprietary service network that works differently from the traditional third-party VSC market. Repairs run through Tesla's own service centers using Tesla parts and Tesla diagnostic software, and the vehicle's maintenance model, over-the-air software updates, in-house service, a closed parts ecosystem, isn't what standard service contracts were designed around. Third-party administrators build their business on networks of independent repair shops. When a car can't practically be serviced inside that network, there's far less product to sell.
So 6.2% is mostly answering a supply question, not a demand question. The 6.2% who do buy are working from a narrower set of available products.
Notice too that Tesla's average price is $4,973, nearly $1,000 above the national average. The few contracts that exist aren't cheap, which is another sign of a thin, specialized market rather than an indifferent customer base.
Practically: if you're buying out a Tesla, don't read the low take-rate as reassurance that nothing will go wrong. A Related Flag: Non-Tesla EVs
Tesla is the extreme case, but it isn't the only EV story worth telling.
For non-Tesla electric vehicles (the Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet, and Volkswagen EVs now coming off lease in real volume) VSC coverage does exist and is improving year over year. Two things are happening at once, and they're related.

There's parts, specialist labor rates, and diagnostic time all run higher. The contract price is a fairly clean read on real repair risk. In that sense, a $6,557 Porsche contract is telling you something true and slightly alarming about what an uncovered year might cost.
Second, that same honest price is what suppresses the take-rate. When the number crosses a certain threshold, buyers stop evaluating it as insurance and start evaluating it as a purchase. $6,557 doesn't feel like a hedge; it feels like a second car payment. Add that many German-marque owners have an established relationship with an independent specialist and a reasonably good sense of what maintenance costs, and more of them opt to self-insure.
The uncomfortable conclusion: the vehicles where coverage is most expensive are often the vehicles where going without it hurts most. If you're buying out a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Porsche and the contract price makes you flinch, that flinch is information. It's the administrator's actuarial estimate of your repair bills, and your instinct that it's a lot of money is not evidence that it's wrong.
Korean makes: the mirror image

1. Your factory warranty is expired or nearly there

Check two numbers before anything else: months remaining and miles remaining on the manufacturer's powertrain and bumper-to-bumper coverage. Your car has a strong reliability record

The honest framing: a VSC on a reliable car is still insurance, and insurance on a low-risk asset is a bad expected-value trade for you and a good one for the administrator. You're not keeping the car long

You can self-insure
This is the strongest argument against, and it deserves to be treated seriously rather than waved at.

If nothing major breaks, you keep the money and the interest. If something does break, you pay the shop directly, with no deductible, no covered-component dispute, and no claims process.
